Week 2 - Area and Perimeter

Week 2 - Area and Perimeter

In Maths this week, we are going to have a bit more practise at finding the area and perimeter of 2D shapes. Use the activities uploaded to the website to help you practise. Remember, you don’t have to complete all of the activities, or you might want to break them down into smaller chunks- do whatever works best for you.

Lesson 1 - Recap:

  • The perimeter is the distance around the edge of a 2D shape (imagine walking all the way around the edge of it, adding up the length of each side as you go).
  • The area of a rectangle is found by multiplying the height of the shape, by the width…     Area = height x width.

Have a go at completing the worksheet below. It has been split into the 3 different levels of challenge (circles, triangles and squares) so choose which level you want to challenge yourself with. We have uploaded the answers too so you can check your work.

Lesson 2 - Application:

Have a go at applying your knowledge of area and perimeter to a real-life challenge. A building company have built a new house and they now need to work out how much carpet and how much skirting board they need to buy for the new house.

To work out how much carpet they’ll need, work out the area of each room.

To work out how much skirting board they’ll need, work out the perimeter of each room.

Copy the table onto your paper (or computer/tablet) and have a go at filling in the boxes. There are 3 different levels of challenge, so choose which is best for you.

Lesson 3 and 4 – Area of irregular shapes:

Follow this link ( ) and scroll down to watch the video titled 'Area of Irregular Shapes'. Then, have a go at some of the activities we have uploaded. Again, choose a couple of the activities at a suitable level of challenge for you- you don’t have to complete them all.

Lesson 5 - Consolidation:

Have a go at some of the questions we have uploaded on the lesson 5 document. These are a chance for you to practise all of the different skills you have learnt so far over the last couple of weeks.
