Week 3 - Multiplication

Maths Week 3- Multiplication

In Maths this week, we are going to be learning how to multiply some pretty big numbers together! To be able to do this confidently, you will need to know your times tables – maybe use the first 10 minutes of each of your Maths lessons this week to have a quick ‘warm up’ on TTRockstars and get your brain ready?

Lesson 1 – Short Multiplication:

In this lesson, you will be learning how to multiply a number with up to 4 digits by a 1-digit number, using the short multiplication method.

Watch the video demonstration of how to complete calculations like these and then have a go at some questions from the worksheet. As always, there are different levels of challenge for you to choose from and we have uploaded the answers too so you can check your work.

Lesson 2 – Short Multiplication (More practise!)

Today is your chance to have a bit more practise using the short multiplication method. If you need to, watch the video from yesterday again to refresh your memory on how to use the short method. Then, have a go at the quiz at the top of this BBC Bitesize lesson (https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zjy2xyc). Make sure you do your working out on paper first and see how many questions you can get right!

Lesson 3 – Long Multiplication

Watch the video below to see how to multiply a number with up to 4 digits by a 2-digit number using the long method of multiplication. Then, have a go at some questions from the worksheet. Again, there are different levels of challenge for you to choose from and we have uploaded the answers too so you can check your work.

Lesson 4 – Long Multiplication (More practise!)

If you would like to, watch the video from yesterday’s lesson to refresh yourself on how the long method of multiplication works. Then, have a go at some of the questions from the worksheet to give you some more fluency practise. Alternatively, take the quiz at the top of this BBC Bitesize lesson  (https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4chnrd) remembering to work out the answers on paper first.

Lesson 5 – Application

Have a go at the missing number questions on the worksheet below to really test your understanding of the short and long methods of multiplication. Work through each question starting at the units and see if you can work out what the missing digit is. There are 4 different levels of challenge for this task- you may want to have a go at a couple of questions from each challenge sheet or just choose one of the levels to complete.
